Chicago—Becker’s Spine Review* recently released the “60 Spine Surgeon Inventors to Know,” which includes all three of Desert Institute for Spine Care’s remarkable surgeons–Justin Field, MD, Christopher Yeung, MD, and Anthony Yeung, MD.
This article highlights 60 Spine Surgeons who have invented spine devices that are changing the procedures available to patients. Dr. Field and Dr. Chris Yeung have been listed for their help in developing RISE and Dr. Anthony Yeung has been recognized for his development of YESS.
Members of the list were selected for their research and innovation contributing to the development of spine surgical devices and techniques. The list was created as a result of extensive research. Surgeons included on the list were trained at top medical schools and have worked with some of the biggest device companies to bring their ideas to the market. In many cases, their contributions have made a difference in the quality and cost-effectiveness of spinal procedures. Many of them are also leaders within their practices, hospital departments or professional organizations.

|Justin Field, MD (DISC, Phoenix). Dr. Field helped develop RISE, an expandable interbody lumbar cage which is designed for use with endoscopic fusions. The device is inserted through a 7 millimeter incision and expands to a height of 17 millimeters to restore disc space height and lordosis. Dr. Field also has special training in motion sparing technology such as artificial disc replacement and adult deformity correction. During his career, Dr. Field has been recognized as one of America’s Most Compassionate Doctors. He earned his medical degree at Tulane University in New Orleans and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Duke University in Durham, N.C. His additional training includes a spine surgery fellowship at The Spine Institute in Santa Monica.|
|Christopher Yeung, MD (DISC, Phoenix). Dr. Yeung helped develop RISE, an expandable interbody lumbar cage which is designed for use with endoscopic fusions. The device is inserted through a 7 millimeter incision and expands to a height of 17 millimeters to restore disc space height and lordosis. During his career, Dr. Yeung has also been the principle investigator for several FDA studies, including Flexicore lumbar artificial disc replacement. Dr. Yeung is the team spine surgeon for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Rattlers. Dr. Yeung earned his medical degree from the University of Southern California School of Medicine and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of California Irvine Medical Center. His additional training includes a spine surgery fellowship at USC Center for Orthopedic Spine Surgery/Los Angeles Spine Surgery.|
|Anthony T. Yeung, MD (DISC, Phoenix). Dr. Yeung developed the FDA-approved Yeung Endoscopic Spine System, and was one of the first spine surgeons to utilize endoscopically-guided laser for degenerative conditions of the lumbar spine. During his career, Dr. Yeung has authored more than 70 scientific publications on his technique. He is currently the president of the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeons and has held leadership positions within numerous other national and international spine organizations. Dr. Yeung received his medical degree from University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque, completed his residency at Maricopa County General Hospital in Phoenix and served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corp in Subic Bay, Philippines.|
